WHAT I TOLD STUDENTS AT HARVARD ABOUT CAPITALISM

As a lifelong capitalist evangelist, serial entrepreneur, and Reagan Libertarian, I was recently asked to deliver a lecture about the virtues of capitalism, entrepreneurship and fiscal conservatism at Harvard University. I was unsure if my message and personal story would be welcomed, or even understood. I am thrilled to report that even at the world’s greatest institution of learning (and liberalism), capitalism and entrepreneurship are alive, well, and still celebrated. Students actually reported my speech has changed the direction of their lives — they now want to become entrepreneurs.

The things that shape our world were not created in Cuba, the Soviet Union, or the old People’s Republic of China. And they weren’t created by government either. They were created by entrepreneurs hoping to change the world, and get rich doing it! The lesson is that if capitalism and entrepreneurship are presented with enthusiasm, passion, energy, and honest personal stories, they will be accepted and celebrated everywhere in the world- even the intellectual, liberal halls of Harvard. The key is to counter the message delivered by President Obama, who spoke recently at a university in Florida and described capitalism as “a broken down theory,” blaming it for our current economic problems. Free market Libertarians and fiscal conservatives need to courageously enter the lion’s den and speak at universities and deliver the polar opposite message. 

We need to be evangelists. 

We need to recruit and sell our vision to students. 

We need to explain how only capitalism gives young people the opportunity to change their lives and live their dreams. 

• Only capitalism lifts people from poverty, or the middle class, to the life of their dreams. 
• Only capitalism creates true hope and opportunity. 
• Only capitalism motivates the creators and producers of this world to make the impossible…possible. 

Here’s the truth: capitalism created the cure for polio, and capitalism will someday cure cancer and AIDS. Capitalism created desktop computers, the Internet, smartphones, iTunes, iPads, Skype, Facebook, Twitter, texting, and DirecTV and much, much more. The things that shape our world were not created in Cuba, the Soviet Union, or the old People’s Republic of China. And they weren’t created by government either. They were created by entrepreneurs hoping to change the world, and get rich doing it! The key is to tell our personal stories. 

President Obama and others who appear to detest capitalism don’t have those stories. They have never created anything with their own smarts, work ethic, creativity, while risking their own money. They’ve never created jobs, donated millions to charity, or dramatically changed lives with their innovations, products, or payrolls. All the Obamas and other capitalist naysayers of the world know about is taking tax dollars from the job creators and financial risk-takers, and redistributing them as bribes to their voters. Obama’s failed policies have proven he has the same level of knowledge about economics, capitalism, and entrepreneurship as I have of ballet – which is zero. 

I spoke to hundreds of students in Professor Michael Parzen’s class (one of the largest at Harvard) about the exciting ups and downs of my career. I spoke about the relentless battles to build my businesses. 

I spoke about the failures and lows I’ve experienced, as well as the lessons I learned that enabled me to turn lemons into lemonade. I told them about the remarkable results, against the longest odds, I’ve achieved as an entrepreneur and dreamer. I taught them it was all made possible by capitalism. As Don King would say, “Only in America.” 

I told them about the leap of faith required of entrepreneurs — to believe in and pursue your dreams against the negativity of critics, cynics, and naysayers. I told them about the mental, physical and spiritual strength required to survive the rejections, disappointments, and challenges. I told them about the amazing rewards achieved when you turn your dreams into reality. I told them how entrepreneurs don’t need alcohol or drugs — we get high on life! I taught them that success requires you be relentless. You must never stop believing in you, your dreams, and your talents. You must never stop fighting like a cornered wolverine. You must never lose faith in God, country, or yourself. 

I told them to find their passion, because passion unleashes purpose and enthusiasm. I told them to attack each day with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind. I told them to say “YES” to every single request made of them in the business world. That’s how you make yourself irreplaceable – even during the worst economy of our lifetimes. Then I asked the Harvard students to raise their hands if they agreed I had energy, enthusiasm and passion. All of them raised their hands with big smiles and loud laughs. Yes they all agreed ENTHUSIASTICALLY that I had enthusiasm. Then I asked them to compare my energy and enthusiasm with an employee of the Department of Motor Vehicles. The auditorium went wild! Pandemonium. Smiles. Laughing. Sparkles in their eyes.

Everyone got it.

With this example even college students at Harvard clearly understood the difference between entrepreneurs and government employees. Everyone instantly gets “it.” That is the reason government fails at everything it does. That is the reason our economy is in shambles and there are no new jobs. The wrong people are in charge of the economy. The solution is simple – only the private sector can truly create jobs. Only the heroic “fly boys” of the business world, the guys and gals with the massive levels of energy, enthusiasm and confidence can turnaround the U.S. economy. Entrepreneurs and their small businesses create 75% of new jobs. Those are America’s heroes. They must be appreciated, motivated, and rewarded – not punished.

Those with enthusiasm, energy, and can-do spirit go into business. Those without those talents, skills, or attributes often go into government. I have no problem with either kind of person. There are heroes in both groups. But you can’t let those without energy, enthusiasm, or can-do spirit make the rules for the economy. Just as you shouldn’t ask me to run the ballet. Government can’t save us. Government can only make things worse. We are currently letting the wrong people run the economy, create the rules, tax the motivation and inspiration out of our entrepreneurial heroes. We are strangling hope, ruining ambition, dampening enthusiasm, and killing the American Dream. Our president is not helping job growth. He’s hurting it. And he’s hurting the future of America.

Even at Harvard I hope they now understand this.

PREPARATION MEETS OPPORTUNITY

The perma bulls on Wall Street, and around the world, continue to say that the worst is over and that even though they have been dead wrong over the last decade…this time, you should trust them. They will tell you that you should continue to buy mutual funds and their other underperforming recommendations…including real estate…which unfortunately is not close to hitting a real bottom. For those with short memories, the majority of so-called investment gurus continued to recommend real estate as an investment right up until the crash. Just a few short months prior to the bubble bursting, none other than Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke told the entire world that “any downturn in real estate would have a limited effect on the overall economy.”

The most common question that I get from people about Bernanke (and Greenspan before him) being so incredibly wrong, goes something like this: “Were they really surprised by what happened, or did they know the truth and simply choose to lie to us?”

Without casting aspersions, let me just say this. Many believe that the Federal Reserve Chairman is the second most powerful person on the planet, second only to the President of the United States. Obviously, they see the data before anyone else and their sources are ALL the key insiders…of every industry, of every company, and of every government globally. With that said…what do you think? Do they lie to us or do they just somehow “miss” all of these these major economic moves?

The most important question to me is, what is the “real” smart money doing? On a regular basis, I forward the thoughts and research of those that I have come to trust…the true experts that I believe represent the reality, rather than the smokescreen, of this ongoing $50 trillion transfer of wealth. And right now they are each saying the same thing…pretty much exactly the same thing. Which is:

– the global economy is being widely manipulated, and without the trillions being printed and then thrown directly it to replace normal consumer activity, we would be in a worldwide depression.

– this manipulation cannot and will not last, and when the chickens come home to roost, the global wake-up call will be devastating for those that did not see it coming (I refer you back to the Bernanke clip).

– those that are prepared…those that buy their winter coats in the summer…will not only survive, but will thrive. They will be represent the “new wealth.”

Along these lines, the true experts that I follow continue to watch what is happening in Europe very, very carefully. In their eyes, Europe’s disaster today is the equivalent of the collapse of Bear Stearns in the Spring of 2007. The canary in the coal mine.

Folks, this has been getting worse and worse and will continue to do so, with the carnage spreading from Europe to the globe. It’s all connected…because money printing and government manipulation simply do not work. Never has and never will.

We’re now seeing confirmation that the Chinese economy has broken down, with real estate prices crashing some 20% year over year. Again, their money printing and economic manipulation is the cause, and once the population begins to riot it will be very tough throughout China…much like what we have seen throughout the Middle East.

We recently learned that Apple now makes up a full 36% of all S&P earnings. Think about this for a moment….in my 26 years of investing I have never seen anything close to this, and no…this is not a positive.

Another situation that is becoming a very real problem is the ongoing destruction of jobs due to technology advancements. The reality of stories like Best Buy losing customers left and right…all due to internet shopping…is happening everywhere. The days of retail are changed forever, and with this change, millions of jobs that will simply never come back. We cannot slow down technology, and would not want to do so. This is merely the reality of our new economy and it is one that everyone should be aware of and prepared for.

We know that the real unemployment rate is much higher than the official 8.1%, and when you see the Labor Force Participation Rate at pretty much an all time low, it tells us that tens of millions of people…just in America…have dropped out of the workplace, most of them forever. This is happening all over the planet. Once governments…both federal and local…are forced to reduce their size and scope, just as is happening in Spain, Portugal, Italy, Greece, the UK, etc., the level of social unrest will not be pretty. This is how socialism always ends…

As I write this, the Dow is off another 150 points and its clear that the real economy is contracting once more. However, with Bernanke at the controls of the FED, we also know that massive amounts of money printing will continue, certainly in an attempt to get Obama re-elected. Bernanke knows that if Obama loses his job, that the jig is up at the FED and Bernanke will lose his job as well. At the end of the day, this will happen anyway, the only question is one of timing.

Here’s the bottom line; we continue to have a centrally planned and controlled global economy. Never in history has this worked and the end result will be the same this time as well. Once this experiment is over, we will see an era of hyperinflation, skyrocketing gold and silver prices, new lows in stock prices, and an economy that is ravaged….all due to unchecked authority at Central Banks and fiat printing governments around the planet. Maybe then we will actually have our first audit of the FED as well!

Those that are prepared for this ongoing $50 trillion wealth transfer will be the big winners. The sheeple…well, lets just say it will not end well for them. There has never been a better time to be a Member of WMI. Connecting our education with entrepreneurs around the planet is much more than just a perfect fit…it also happens to be the right thing to do.
